Psycho Cop Returns - blu-ray Review

4 beersBeing the obstinate fool that I am, I have had many run-ins with local law enforcers.  I just can’t help myself.  Most of them – mustached or not – have been surprisingly accommodating, using zip ties instead of handcuffs and so on.  Of course, there’s always that asshole hiding behind the shiny protection of the badge; the sunglasses at night jerk that is all about the altitude of attitude.  And all it takes is for one bad apple to spoil the whole damn lot of them.

Which brings me to the Psycho Cop horror series.  In it, much like some of the badge-wearing asshats I’ve had the misfortune to run into from time to time, one officer decides to kill everyone whom he suspects have ever broken the law.  Make no mistake about it; Officer Joe Vickers (Robert Shafer) is a Grade A jerk.  He’s also a fucking serial killer, knocking off any citizen of this country who dares question his absolute authority.

If Psycho Cop had him ravaging the wilderness in search of law breaking hooligans to kill, Psycho Cop 2 sees him in the big, bad city as a Satan-worshipping archangel of doom.  He’s an ugly son of a bitch, too, who gets tipped off on an office party full of illegal drugs, yuppies, and strippers that makes him all kids of trigger finger itchy.

Hey! Ho, Mofos!  Let the good times roll!  Psycho Cop Returns is a shotgun blast to the face.

For a reeling and rocking 85-minutes, director Adam Rifkin (The Chase) throws a violent party of boobs, bare asses, blood and other b-movie theatrics at the office wall with a splat! splat! splat! rat-a-tat-tat rhythm that makes this cinematic quickie feel oh so very dirrty.  It flexes just like a hungry whore.  Unlike a lot of other 90’s b-movies, Psycho Cop Returns absolutely works and every single cast member knows just what type of movie he or she is in.

The film co-stars Barbara Niven, Rod Sweitzer, Miles Dougal, and Dave Bean as the yuppies who decide to hold an after hours bachelor party.  It’s a dance off, pants off kind of day for this collection of bozos and bimbos.  And Vickers plans to break it up with every damn device within reach.  One gets shoved down an elevator shaft, another gets thrown off the roof of the building.  Regardless of the kill, his brutality – even after death – knows know bounds.

Psycho Cop Returns is now available on blu-ray thanks to Vinegar Syndrome.  It is a limited edition release, with the first 1,666 copies offering a double thick silver foil limited edition o-card designed by Chris Garofalo.  Get your copy now.

Vinegar Syndrome presents Psycho Cop Returns in a region free Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack.  The 1080p transfer has been newly scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm vault elements and looks absolutely stunning.  Most films shot in the 1990s have a weak look to their transfers that, surprisingly, this one sidesteps.  Black levels are strong and lines are thick, allowing for noticeable differences in the shadows and enviros.  Flesh tones are adequately saturated and fine details are noticeable in some of the clothing.  The audio is supplied by a DTS-HD Mono Audio track that supplies a well-balanced audio mix.

Supplements:

Commentary:

  • Featuring a great commentary track from director Adam Rifkin, Psycho Cop Returns is full of great information about the making of the movie and Rifkin’s nom de plume of Riff Coogan.
