The Dark Knight Rises "Rises" to $249 Million
After delaying the announcement in honor of the victims in Colorado, the numbers were finally announced for The Dark Knight Rises. Everyone knew there would be a cloud over the results and the weekend for that matter once the news broke about Colorado. Predictions originally put the final film in Christopher Nolan's trilogy at around $190 million for first day sales, but moviegoers were not that enthusiastic about heading to the cineplex the very same day as the shootings. As a result it brought the final tally to $160 million on the first day, and the total weekend gross to $249 Million. Records were still broken for best 2D opening.
In light of the incident, Warner Bros. has decided to donate a sizable contribution to the victims in Colorado. With the first weekend in the books, Nolan and company look to next weekend in hopes to fend off against The Watch, another overproduced ensemble cast comedy with Vince Vaughn playing the same character he's played for over a decade. I think TDKR will do just fine.
Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach from the abysmal Watchmen) will play Maddox in the new Robocop joining Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie, Gary Oldman and that coked out guy from The Killing. No one really expects it to be that great, but it sure is a relief to see Haley getting some more exposure, especially after (unknowingly) destroying the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. So far the movie's lining up nicely with the exception of the Kinnamon casting job. I've watched The Killing and it's the most nauseating series to finagle it's way on AMC. The concept of "red herring" applies to the whole series repeatedly. Not that that's Kinnamon's fault, but his overall demeanor is hard to picture as Robocop.
There's also rumors surfacing that Jay Baruchel will be scoring a role in the film as well. No confirmation has been made, but if I had to take a guess it would be one of the scientists who gets decimated by ED-209. Either way, it'd be another bizarre casting call for the film, which is set to release on August 9th, 2013. As of yet, there has been no announcement of former WCW Wrestler Sting coming to Robocop's aid, despite the fact that it's LONG overdue
