Movie Review

By Brandi L. James

Fresh from the battered and fried minds of Seth Green and Matt Senreich - creators of Adult Swim’s toy-smashing, clay-mation fest, Robot Chicken - comes a deliciously demented twenty-three minute parody of George Lucas’ famed six-piece combo, Star Wars. Yes, just when you thought that Transformers promoting prostate health on the Cartoon Network was where it’s at, Stoopid Monkey Productions decides to officially violate the far, far away galaxy in ways never thought possible, cooking up the quintessential ode to the dork side: Robot Chicken: Star Wars. Sure, the occasional fan will only be left clouded by references to the cloudiness of Cloud City, but for the legions of SW geeks who know their wampas from their tauntauns and still carry around that 32-action figure filled Darth Vader head like a briefcase, it is nothing short of finger lickin’ good.

With over thirty stop-motion shorts packed into one double-sized episode, it’s easy to blink during Robot Chicken: Star Wars and miss a pop culture nugget (like C-3PO setting off a modern day metal detector and thinking it’s his keys, or Chewy primping Arthur Fonzarelli-style in the bathroom mirror). Impossible to ignore, however, is that the film’s creators are also super hardcore fans armed with esoteric humor, and fearless when it comes to ripping on the very thing they love most. Oh, and Mr. Lucas, even you are not immune from the line of fire.

In one of the episode’s funniest skits, Lucas comes awkwardly close to an obsessive, costume-laden freak at the Star Wars convention. When the fan’s son asks how his birth compares with meeting Lucas, Dad need not hesitate; epitomizing the dedication of fans worldwide he answers ever so lovingly, “not even close.” Not to be outdone, however, is the post-coital convo between Luke and sister, Princess Leia: “that was SO wrong.” Throw in a commercial for Admiral Ackbar cereal, Max Rebo’s duet with *NSync’s Joey Fatone, a Yo Momma fight between Luke and Emperor Palpatine (Luke: “Yo Momma is so fat, Jabba the Hut said ‘Daaaaam!’” Palpatine: Yo Momma is so ugly, she put the ‘ug’ in ‘ugnaught’”), or my personal fave, President George Dubya (with newly discovered high midichlorian count) engaging in a lightsaber battle with President Lincoln (“take that George Washington”) and pulls a Jedi mind trick on President Clinton at the Mickey D’s drive-thru.

Fellow nerd herders Green, Lucas, Breckin Meyer, Seth MacFarlane, Conan O’Brien, Hulk Hogan, and Mark Hamilton, all of whom lend their voices and improv to the cause, come over to play. And with RC:SW’s Emmy nod for Outstanding Animation Program greenlighting an attack of the sequel (set to premiere this coming November), fans will flip to find that SW alums Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams are being added to the fry.

Despite the bleeped out f-bombs, Robot Chicken: Star Wars is definitely not for kids. Heck, it’s really not for anyone without an encyclopedic knowledge of all six episodes. I mean you’ll enjoy it, but let’s just say it won’t be as fun. But for those who live for anything Vader, this is the holy grail of geekdom. So grab your Star Wars action figures and prepare for a hysterical intergalactic battle, because things are about to get smashed; and Robot Chicken: Star Wars promises that it won’t be pretty.

More Robot Chicken: Star Wars quotes:

"By shooting it with lightning! That's how I solve all my problems! And then afterwards I shall eat pudding."

"Hey, hey, hey, hey. C'mon. C'mon, don't do that. Just - just. Look, you know, I'm just dealing with a lot of crap right now. Death Star blown up by a bunch of effing teenagers, you know? I didn't mean to snap."

"WHAT? I'm very busy right now!... Oh! Oh, well - well, where are they going?... Oh, all right, uh... just get me a turkey club... Um, coleslaw, I guess. I'm not even gonna eat it... Well, what are you getting?... See, I always order the wrong thing. No, no, I'll just stick with that. OK, bye - what?... Oh, uh, Cherry Coke. Thanks."

"And the Empire will be defeated by Ewoks!"
