2007 Holiday Movie Preview

Ok, now that we've mothballed the caped summer superheroes, and shuttered the cell-phone wielding kids back into the classroom, it's time to get serious about movie watching during that most wonderful time of the year!

More Reel Rants
Following is the Reel Reviews list of the 2007 Holiday Movie Releases that make our pants go crazy.

NOVEMBER 9
Fred Claus – A bit early for a Christmas movie, but in looking at the release schedule, why not this weekend? Reportedly will become THE next holiday comedy classic. I think Peter Billingsley might have something to say about that.

NOVEMBER 16
Margot at the Wedding – Reportedly Jack Black moved in with Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh so they could all perfect their roles as a dysfunctional family. I want to be dysfunctional!

Beowulf – It's a cartoon! It's real life! No, it's another one of those motion-capture thingys a la Polar Express and Gollum. Looks like real people, moves like real people, but it's actually computers. be sure to check it out in iMax. Breathtaking!

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium – Looking to strike that Willy Wonka gold again. Stars Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman.

Love in the Time of Cholera – Terrible title. Sounds like a bad time to be loving someone. Stars Benjamin Bratt and Javier Bardem.

NOVEMBER 21
Enchanted – Mixes live action with animation. Seems like a one-trick premise. Will be interesting to see if they get any additional mileage from it.

The Mist – Yet another Stephen King adaptation. This time the monster is....well, condensation?

NOVEMBER 28
The Savages – Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney in a melodrama about the realities of familial responsibility. At least it will be well-acted.

NOVEMBER 30
Awake – Stars Jessica Alba and... and... who cares? It stars Jessica Alba. About a man who suffers from "anesthetic awareness."

DECEMBER 5
Juno – About a teenager facing an unplanned pregnancy who then makes an unusual and bizarre decision regarding her unborn child. How Christmassy!

DECEMBER 7
The Golden Compass – Let the controversy begin. It's not a story about atheism, folks. It's a wonderful story written by an atheist. There's a big difference.

Atonement – Based on the British romance novel of the same name by Ian McEwan. Does anyone do period better than Keira Knightley?

Grace is Gone – Let's see if John Cusack can recover from The Martian Child.

DECEMBER 14
I Am Legend – Will Smith's take on the last man alive. Another boy and his dog story? Hardly!

Alvin and the Chipmunks – CG rodents? Hip-hop chipmunks? For better entertainment check out the dancing hamsters on the web.

The Kite Runner – With the controversy finally settled, let's see just how controversial it is. Our money says not very.

DECEMBER 21
Charlie Wilson's War – Leave it to Hollywood to find humor in the war in Afghanistan. No wonder they're on strike.

Walk Hard – Cal Naughton, Jr. does Dewey Cox who looks like Johnny Cash. From Judd Apatow, what else did you expect?

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – Tim Burton and Johnny Depp back together again. Can't wait to see Depp sing.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets – Are we ready for the awkward chemistry of Nicholas Cage and Helen Mirren?

P.S., I Love You – Stars Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. How will Butler handle the Irish accent. From the trailers it seems like he's mastered the voice-over for a Lucky Charms commercial.

DECEMBER 25
Persepolis – Another big screen adaptation of a graphic novel (don't call them comic books). Except this time the hero's a young Iranian girl growing up during the Islamic revolution.

Alien vs. Predator: Requiem – Perfect for a Christmas day escape to the movies.

The Bucket List – Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman throw their hats into the Oscar ring.

DECEMBER 26
There Will be Blood – The alternate tagline for 2005's Saw II finally gets its own movie? No. Rather, a story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around turn-of-the-century Texas prospector in the early days of the business. Features a score entirely composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.

DECEMBER 28
Cassandra's Dream – Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor in a Woody Allen thriller. Sounds like a rubberneckers delight.
